Broadway sensation Libby Holman is accused of killing her husband, tobacco baron Smith Reynolds, so she can run off with her uber-wealthy lover, Louisa 'Dupont' Jenney. In the midst of the trial, RJ Reynolds, Smith's brother, marches in and orders the judge to drop the charges.  Libby walks free. Why?
